Gerwig’s film had been test-screened a few times the past couple of months. Reactions have been mostly positive. I’m not entirely sure why bypassing TIFF and Telluride would be a good thing for such an anticipated, supposedly, auteur-driven movie, but I’m not ready to theorize. Kohn and Thompson also mention “The Farewell” and “Midsommar” as the arthouse breakouts of the season. Has it been that lame-duck a summer?
